The Hoi An Nightlife Scene

Hoi An operates under a midnight curfew in the Ancient Town, which is enforced well enough that the bars close. The Old Town bars on the Hoai River — specifically along Bach Dang Street — are worth the early evening: lanterns reflected on the river, tourist boats going past, the kind of atmosphere that photographs well and is genuinely pleasant in person before it becomes crowded. After midnight the action moves to An Bang Beach, 4km north: a strip of open-fronted beach bars that runs later, is cheaper, and has better air circulation. The White Marble Wine Bar on the river is the quality option for a quieter cocktail. Cargo Club on Nguyen Thai Hoc has the best rooftop for watching the lantern boats.

A full Hoi An evening — Ancient Town bar with river view, dinner, then An Bang for late drinks — costs VND 400,000–800,000. White Marble and Cargo Club charge slightly more than the riverside average.

Best Nights

The lantern festival falls on the 14th of each lunar month; on this night the Old Town goes car-free after 5pm, the river fills with lanterns, and the bars are at full capacity by 7pm. This is the most atmospheric night in Hoi An and requires arriving early. Outside the festival, Friday and Saturday have more visitors from Da Nang (30 minutes by Grab). The An Bang beach bars run consistently through the week.

Practical

Hoi An's Ancient Town is a walkable UNESCO zone; no motorbikes are permitted after 8am. Renting a bicycle (VND 30,000–50,000 per day) is the correct solution. Grab operates for getting to An Bang Beach. At midnight the Ancient Town closes; taxis and Grabs are required to return from An Bang. Cash is standard across most venues; a few of the better restaurants accept cards. No dress codes.
